NOTE: Do not insert the 3Com Megahertz modem into the computer until you are prompted to do so.

NOTE: Windows 2000 was not yet released at the time of modem release. Check the 3Com Web site (www.3com.com) for updates involving Windows 2000 and your modem.

Installing from the CD

If you do not have a CD-ROM drive, you can create your own set of installation diskettes by using the CD-ROM drive on another computer. Insert the Installation CD and choose the "Create Diskettes" option. Follow the prompts to create your own set of installation diskettes. You will need several blank diskettes when creating your own set.

  1. With your computer running and Windows active, insert the 3Com Installation CD into your notebook.
  2. If AutoPlay is active, the Master Installer window appears. If the Master Installer window does not appear, go to your CD-ROM drive and launch setup.exe.
  3. Click Install Modem.
  4. Click Continue.
  5. Follow the prompts to complete your modem installation.

Your computer will go through a brief installation process. Once this process completes, your modem will be installed.

You must use a Communications Software package to send and receive data and faxes.

Installing from the Windows .INF-only Installation Disk

NOTE: Installing from the 3Com Installation Diskette sets up your modem hardware for your computer under Windows, but gives you no additional software. For a full diskette installation, use the Installation CD and select "Create Diskettes". Use a computer that has a working CD-ROM drive and a floppy disk drive.

If you do not have access to a CD-ROM drive, use the 3Com Megahertz Windows INF-only Installation Disk and follow these steps:

  1. With the computer on and Windows running, remove your modem from its plastic traveling case and insert it into the PC Card slot in your computer. Windows starts the plug and play process.
  2. Follow the prompts as they appear, inserting the 3Com Megahertz Installation Disk into your notebook's floppy drive when you are prompted for the "diskette provided by manufacturer".

Your computer will go through a brief installation process. Once this process completes, your modem will be installed.

You must use a Communications Software package to send and receive data and faxes.

Uninstalling Your Modem

In Windows 98 and 95, you can uninstall your modem any time following the installation; however, any changes to the system files made between the install and the uninstall will be lost. The files that existed before the install will be restored.

  1. Click Start.
  2. Click Programs.
  3. Click 3Com Utilities.
  4. Choose Uninstall.
  5. Follow the prompts.
  6. When the Uninstall is complete, remove the modem PC Card and restart your notebook.

The Uninstall utility removes desktop icons, registry entry files, the user guide, and files used by the modem.
