| U.S. Robotics' First DSL Modem Now Available to Telcos and ISPs
Internet Access Leader Offers ‘Consumer-Friendly’ Brand
and Retail Channel Opportunity to DSL Providers The modem offers ISPs and telecommunications companies a well-known and respected consumer brand and extensive distribution in computer and consumer electronics retail outlets, according to Christine Pomeroy, vice president of marketing, U.S. Robotics Core Business Unit in Schaumburg, Ill. “The U.S. Robotics modem offers DSL providers and their customers a name that is synonymous with high-quality, reliable Internet access and responsive customer service,” Pomeroy said. “Our extensive retail partnerships also gives providers a direct path to a retail presence, expanding their market reach and increasing their competitive advantage.” Featuring the easy installation of the USB standard and based on the Globespan chipset, the U.S. Robotics USB ADSL modem allows home and office PC users with DSL access to reach Internet download speeds of up to eight megabits-per-second. “The USB standard provides a consumer-friendly product with ‘plug-and-play’ installation and easy-to-use software for configuring and monitoring the connection,” said Juan Lopez, U.S. Robotics product line manager. “The modem’s high-speed connectivity is perfect for interactive gaming and on-demand streaming audio and video entertainment while enabling users to retrieve large Internet files in seconds rather than minutes. These features make our modem the optimum choice for telephone companies and ISPs deploying residential DSL service.” Available in the third quarter of 2001, the modem is expected to sell for an estimated street price of $149.99. The U.S. Robotics modem supports all ADSL standards including ITU G.992.1 (G.dmt), ANSI T1.413 Issue 2, ANSI TR-59 (RADSL), and ITU G. 992 Annex A, Annex B and Annex C, and is interoperable with deployed DSLAM equipment.
