My modem won't dial out or doesn't answer incoming calls.

Solution 1:

You may have a bad phone cord connection to the modem. Try connecting your modem to your the telephone wall jack with another telephone cord.

Solution 2:

Your phone cord may be plugged in to the wrong jack. The phone cord should be plugged into the jack on the modem and into the telephone wall jack.

Solution 3:

You may have devices between the modem and the phone jack. There should be no line splitters, fax machines, or other devices between the modem and the telephone wall jack.

Solution 4:

You may have plugged the modem’s phone cord in to a digital line. Contact the department responsible for your phone system if you are unsure whether your phone line is analogue or digital.

Solution 5:

Your modem may not set to the correct country code.

  1. Start a terminal program (e.g., Hyperterminal).
  2. Type the AT command ATI7 and then press ENTER to verify the country setting for the modem. A response similar to the following appears:

    The Product type field shows the current country setting of the modem. If the correct country is not displayed, continue to the next step.

  3. Select the country in which you plan to operate the modem and enter the AT command ATC10=XX. For example, to set the country of operation to Italy, issue the AT command ATC10=03 and then press ENTER.

    Special Notes:
    The CTR21 country setting covers: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Malta.
    If the desired country is not included in this list, try country setting CTR21 or US/Canada.
    For Latin American countries: Brazil and Mexico have unique settings. For other Latin American countries, select US/Canada as the country setting.

  4. Repeat the above steps to select a different country of operation.

Solution 6:

If you phone system requires as access code to access and outside line, be sure to include the code in the number that you are dialing.

Solution 7:

If your voice mail alters your dial tone when messages are waiting, restore the normal dial tone by retrieving your messages before using the modem to dial out.
