Uninstall all other modems that are installed on your computer. For instructions, refer to the documentation for your previous modem.
Unplug all telephone and power cords connected to your previous modems.
Shut down your computer and power it off.
Locate the serial port on the back of your computer. To find the serial port, look for COM, MODEM, RS-232, , or SERIAL. Do not use the AUX, GAME, LPT, or PARALLEL ports.
Step Two: Connect the modem to the computer
Connect one end of the serial modem cable to modem and the other end to your computer’s serial port.
Step Three: Connect the modem to an analogue phone line
Caution:
Use an analogue phone line only. The modem will be damaged if you connect it to a digital phone line.
Most office phones are wired through digital lines. If you do not know whether you phone line is analogue or digital, consult your telephone service provider or building facilities department.
Plug one end of the provided phone cord into the jack on the back of the modem and plug the other end into an analogue telephone wall jack.
To continue to use your analogue telephone service with the , connect your telephone to the modem’s jack.
Step Four: Connect the modem to power
Plug the power adapter into the jack on the modem and the other end into an electrical outlet.
Turn on the modem using the power switch on the front of the modem. The CS LED should light.
Note: If the power LED does not light, the modem may not be turned on. Make sure that the power supply is connected between the modem and the electrical outlet.
You must be logged in as an administrator in order to properly install the new modem.
When you turn your computer on, Windows automatically detects the modem and installs a generic driver.
Insert the USRobotics Installation CD-ROM to install the USRobotics driver.
If the USRobotics Installation CD-ROM does not start automatically:
Windows Vista: Click Windows Start > Computer.
Windows XP: Click Windows Start > My Computer.
Windows 2000: On the desktop, double-click My Computer.
Double click the CD drive.
If the AutoPlay window appears, click Run autorun.exe. If prompted by User Account Control, click Continue.
If prompted, select your preferred language. If asked to read the license agreement, read the agreement and click Yes.
Click Install Modem, and follow the on-screen instructions to install the driver for the modem. If prompted, click OK.
Windows Vista: If prompted by Windows Security, click Install.1
Windows XP: If a Software or Hardware Installation warning appears, click Continue Anyway.1
Windows 2000: If a Digital Signature Not Found window appears, click Yes.1
Click Finish to complete the installation.

Windows Me
When you turn your computer on, Windows automatically detects the modem and installs a generic driver.
Insert the USRobotics Installation CD-ROM to install the USRobotics driver.
If prompted, select your preferred language. If asked to read the license agreement, read the agreement and click Yes.
Click Windows Start > Settings > Control Panel.
Double-click System.
On the Device Manager tab, double click Modem to expand the entry.
Double-click Sportster V.90 56K Faxmodem.
On the Driver tab, click Update Driver.
Select Automatic search for a better driver (Recommended) and click Next.
Click Finish to complete the installation.

Windows 98
Turn on your computer. The Found New Hardware Wizard will detect your modem.
Insert the USRobotics Installation CD-ROM to install the USRobotics driver.
In the Found New Hardware Wizard, click Next and follow the on-screen instructions.
Select Search for best driver for your device (Recommended) and click Next.
Select CD-ROM drive and click Next.
Click Next, then click Finish to complete the installation.

Windows 95B
Turn on your computer. The Update Device Driver Wizard will detect your modem.
Insert the USRobotics Installation CD-ROM to install the USRobotics driver.
In the Update Device Driver Wizard, click Next and follow the on-screen instructions.
If prompted, click Finish to complete the installation.

Windows NT 4.0
You must be logged in as an administrator in order to properly install the new modem.
Insert the USRobotics Installation CD-ROM to install the USRobotics driver.
If prompted, select your preferred language. If asked to read the license agreement, read the agreement and click Yes.
Click Windows Start > Settings > Control Panel.
Double-click Modems.
When the Install New Modem screen appears, click Next to have Windows detect the modem.
Click Change.
Click Have Disk. Type D:\ and click OK, where D is the drive letter assigned to your CD-ROM drive.
Select U.S. Robotics 56K FAX EXT and click OK.
Click Next.
Click Finish to complete the installation. When you see the Modems Properties tab, you will see the COM port that is assigned to your modem.
Click Close. If the System Settings Change window appears, click Yes to restart your computer and complete the installation.

Additional Software
For your convenience, the USRobotics Installation CD-ROM provides additional optional software tools that complements your modem, including the following:
USR MoH enables the V.92 feature “Modem On Hold”, which suspends your Internet connection when the modem detects an inbound telephone call. In order to use the “Modem On Hold” feature, you must subscribe to Call Waiting service with your telephone service provider.
PhoneTools software lets you send and receive faxes.
To see the additional software tools for your modem, select Software on the USRobotics Installation CD-ROM.
