Using JetSetter Software

JetSetter software allows you to select the country where you plan to use your modem and automatically configures the modem for that country's telephone system to ensure compatibility and high performance.

If you travel to a different country, you can change your modem's configuration by opening JetSetter and selecting the country. If you are in a country that is not listed, select USA. If you have problems connecting, see the Troubleshooting and Support section of this guide.

Connecting in different countries may require trial and error until you determine exactly what you need, because a particular country may have multiple exchange systems that require different configurations. The information provided below is to help you with this process.

Make sure that you have the correct country adapter when you try to connect. We suggest you try each step below, one at a time:

• In the JetSetter window, select the country you are connecting from, click OK, and try to connect.



• Select USA, activate blind dialing, and try connecting.



• Try blind dialing. Not all countries use the same signal frequencies to generate a dial tone. This difference can lead to an issue where the modem appears to work fine in one country and not in another country, generating a "No Dial Tone" warning. Also, some analog PBX systems generate a silent dial tone that your modem cannot detect. With blind dialing, you can dial regardless of whether the modem detects a dial tone or not.

Blind Dialing

Blind dialing lets you dial regardless of whether the modem detects a dial tone. Turn on blind dialing by inserting X3 into your software initialization string immediately before the telephone number. This setting disables any "Detect Dial Tone" feature in your communications software.

If you are using dial-up networking, follow these steps to turn on blind dialing:

Windows 95, 98, Me, and NT 4.0

1. Click Windows Start, Settings, and Control Panel.
2. Double-click the Modems icon.
3. Highlight USRobotics 56K PC Card Modem and select Properties.
4. Select the Connection tab.
5. De-select Wait for Dial Tone Before Dialing under Call Preferences.
6. Click OK.
7. Click Close.
8. Close the Control Panel window.

Windows 2000

1. Click Windows Start, Settings, and Control Panel.
2. Double-click the Phone and Modem Options icon.
3. Select the Modem tab.
4. Highlight USRobotics 56K PC Card Modem and select Properties.
5. De-select Wait for Dial Tone Before Dialing under Dial Control.
6. Click OK.
7. Click OK again.
8. Close the Control Panel window.

Windows XP

1. Click Windows Start and Control Panel.
2. Double-click the Phone and Modem Options icon.
3. Select the Modem tab.
4. Highlight USRobotics 56K PC Card Modem and select Properties.
5. De-select Wait for Dial Tone Before Dialing under Dial Control.
6. Click OK.
7. Click OK again.
8. Close the Control Panel window.

To turn off blind dialing, insert X4 in the initialization string immediately after the telephone number. Follow the steps above for your operating system and reselect Wait for Dial Tone Before Dialing.

Linux Information

The JetSetter software can determine the Unix device file which was assigned by the PCMCIA support software to the modem. It can also be used to configure the modem for the country where it is being used to ensure compatibility and high performance.

To set the country where you plan to use the modem, use the JetSetter-s command (or at+gci? in Terminal Mode), followed by the country where you are using the modem. The country can be specified either by its full name, or by the country's official ISO-3166 digit code. (For example, the USA's two Hex digits code is B5, and Canada's is 20.)
