How do I configure my gateway if I am connecting a gaming console?

If you want to connect a gaming console to your gateway, such as a Microsoft Xbox® or Sony PlayStation2™, you will have to open up access to specific ports so the devices can communicate with the Internet. This is done from the Security menu, using Port Triggering.

Note: Opening ports on a gateway can cause potential security risks. In particular, opening Terminal Services UPnP Port 3389 on Windows XP can allow Internet hackers to take over your computer if Windows XP is not patched with Microsoft's latest security updates. If you are opening ports on your gateway, you will want to make sure you have wireless security applied to the gateway, and you may want to restrict the devices that are allowed to connect to the gateway to ensure a secure wireless network.

The following is an examples on how to configure your gateway if you are connecting a Xbox®. For a complete list of applications and port information, visit www.iana.org. This page also details how you could create your own PlayStation2™ Port Triggering rule.

Create Port Triggering rules for an Xbox®

The following rules give the example for an Xbox, where you need to open the TCP port 3047 and UDP ports 88 and 3047 on your gateway. To create a similar rule, you will need to know which TCP and UDP port(s) need to be opened so the device can communicate over the Internet.

  1. Start a Web browser. In the location or address line of your Web browser, type 192.168.1.1 and log in using the user name and password you previously configured in order to access the configuration pages.

  2. Click the Security menu and select Port Triggering.

  3. Click Add.

  4. Select Custom application and enter Xbox as the name of the rule.

  5. For Trigger Port Start and Trigger Port End, enter 3074 in both boxes.

  6. Select TCP/UDP for the Trigger Protocol.

  7. For Open Port Start and Open Port End , enter 3074 in both boxes.

  8. Select TCP/UDP for the Open protocol.

  9. In the next line, for Trigger Port Start and Trigger Port End, enter 88 in both boxes.

  10. Select UDP for the Trigger Protocol.

  11. For Open Port Start and Open Port End , enter 88 in both boxes.

  12. Select UDP for the Open protocol.

  13. Click Apply at the bottom of the page when you are finished.

On the Port Triggering page, you should see the rules for Xbox.

Create Port Triggering rules for a PlayStation2™

Even though the gateway comes with the default rule for enabling Port Triggering for a PlayStation2™, the following steps show how you could create the rule yourself.

  1. Start a Web browser. In the location or address line of your Web browser, type 192.168.1.1 and log in using the user name and password you previously configured in order to access the configuration pages.

  2. Go to the Security menu and select Port Triggering.

  3. Click Add.

  4. Select Custom application and enter PlayStation2 as the name of the rule.

  5. For Trigger Port Start and Trigger Port End, enter 10070 in the first box, and 10080 in the second box.

  6. Select TCP/UDP for the Trigger Protocol.

  7. For Open Port Start and Open Port End , enter 10070 in the first box, and 10080 in the second box.

  8. Select UDP for the Open protocol.

  9. In the next line, for Trigger Port Start and Trigger Port End, enter 10070 in both boxes.

  10. Select UDP for the Trigger Protocol.

  11. For Open Port Start and Open Port End , enter 10070 in both boxes.

  12. Select UDP for the Open protocol.

  13. Click Apply at the bottom of the page when you are finished.

On the Port Triggering page, you should see the rules for PlayStation2.
